LLM: Lateral work and Leg Yield: Liberty Phase continued
This next video shows a continued progression of my Liberty-Line-Mounted approach to Lateral work and Leg Yield. It is another Liberty exercise using "Touch training". The next series will be Line work continuing the series in a fun, creative way.

hey farah - i particularly find this series helpful, thanks for posting. I have been trying them out and the other day Sun was in very high spirits and in a 5-acre field she chose to play at liberty with me and performed perfect 10 metre circles around me in collcted trot. i focussed on her middle and for the first time we danced the shoulder in at liberty for about about 3 circles! next time i thought it would be nice to try that again but this time she was not in a highly excited mood and try as I might (and I TRIED!) I could not get her to shift into high spirit mode but she chose to CW and do 10metre circles around me and would go and come back but only at an ambling walk! So, what might you suggest in these moments if working alone, your horse prefers the amble?
ReplyDeletep.s great to hear you will be returning to the UK in June
It's so fun to play isn't it! If I understand correctly, you are asking how you bring energy up or How to work on the Laterals or both? I usually do this play early in my session so I engage any play energy they might have. That is where the natural collection lives. If they are winding down in there energy I may switch gears with them or I can work with LFB at the trot or canter to bring it up again. Don't know if I got to the root of your question?
Deletehey, great to hear from you- i'm asking how you bring the energy up when horsey just wants to walk! When her energy is up we play, circle in perfect collection, gallop off, return at a gallop all with tiny voice and body movements. however, when she is a different mood and wants to just walk - I am bringing up everything I've got, using my core, my focus, waving lunge whips around until i drop, and still nothing more then a walk! The lateral work came easy when her energy is up and she loves to do show me her hot moves but how do you get energy up when you are just one person working alone and horsey isn't in the mood? I feel that this is a key moment in our training. thanks in advance
ReplyDeleteOk I understand now. I might work on LFB at the trot and canter. You mentioned though "not in the mood" and it is important to pick ideas that are inline with the horse that shows up so we are not setting ourselves up for too much struggling. That said, I know you mentioned you feel it is a key moment and understand that. So If I had a video, I would be able to guide you more precisely because I have met you and Sun so I do have a feel for her and how you work with her.:)
DeleteThank Farah - I shall get a video together. I know that LFB at trot or canter would help things but that is precisely the challenge when madam just feels walking!many thanks.
ReplyDeleteHave you tried a shopping bag on the the end of your stick?
DeleteI wanted to add (and you may have no issue with this at all) consistency in body language and changes in body language are very important. If you are changing it all the time and releasing at the wrong time, it could be a miscommunication. I could observe that in a video if that was the case. :)
DeleteJust curious - what does LFB stand for?
ReplyDeleteThanks
